Environmental Activity in Al Jab'a village - Bethlehem

 

On the 14th of August 2024, Inad Theatre conducted an environmental activities in the villages of Al Jab'a, Bethlehem Governorate Governorate. The activity was primarily focused on raising environmental awareness across different age groups. Participants included children, youth, women, and men, all of whom demonstrated strong engagement and involvement throughout the event.

Citizens of Al Jab'a displayed exceptional cooperation during the coordination of activities, greatly aiding in the smooth organization and execution of the events.
Notably, the large turnout and active participation significantly contributed to the success of all activity. 

Citizens were visibly happy and delighted to take part in the activities held within their communities. The children’s joy and enthusiasm were especially apparent during the theatrical performances, as they eagerly engaged in discussions about environmental concepts and good practices. Likewise, the women displayed great enthusiasm during the Pottery-making workshop, clearly enjoying both the learning process, the creation of their own pieces and most importantly the positive relationship with the environment as it utilizes natural materials like clay, which is abundant and biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly medium. This craft not only produces durable, long-lasting items that reduce the need for disposable products but also fosters an appreciation for natural resources and sustainable practices.

Key activities carried out in the village:

  • “Light and Clean” - An interactive Performance

This interactive, educational, and engaging performance addressed health and environmental issues. It encouraged children to adopt healthy and positive habits/practices, including regular teeth brushing, hand hygiene, maintaining the cleanliness of personal and public spaces, the importance of healthy eating, the need to conserve water and energy, and engage in community clean-ups which further contribute to a cleaner environment. Additionally, the performance highlighted the benefits of regular exercise and its impact on daily activities. The performance mainly aimed to increase public awareness of various environmental issues to protect natural resources, reduce pollution, and foster a sense of social responsibility among children for a better future.

  • My Environment, My Home- Theatrical Performance

A community theater paly focused on environmental preservation and the critical need to understand and implement protective measures and emphasize on the integral connection between our surroundings and our well-being. The performance also highlights the importance of treating our environment with care and respect, as the health of our homes is directly linked to the health of the planet. The Performance also addressed the need to adopt sustainable practices and maintaining cleanliness routines, including personal hygiene and the maintenance of surrounding environment to enhance the quality of their living spaces. Following the performance, a discussion workshop was conducted with the attendees to explore the key issues presented in the play and to exchange viewpoints.

  • "Mankousheh and a Cup of Tea" Activity

Organized by Tawjeeh Center for Democracy, this event targeted women from both communities and included activities to prepare bread sandwiches with olive oil and thyme. The purpose of the activity was to underscore the significance of earth-produced plants and how vital they are to both human health and environmental sustainability, (olives and thyme for the activity), while celebrating the beauty of nature through the traditional preparation of sandwiches.  The event also highlighted the importance of plants/trees (in general) to help stabilize soil, and absorb carbon dioxide (among other benefits), mitigating climate change effects, and strengthening the interconnection of our environment and our own survival.

  • Pot Planter Workshop -  Making a Planter Beginner Pottery

In this workshop, participants crafted clay pots and planted seedlings in them once they had dried. women were involved in shaping the pots from clay. The objective of the activity was to educate participants on the significance of plants and agriculture in addressing climate change, enhancing environmental, and familiarizing them with various plant species.  The activity also highlighted the several environmental benefits of using natural materials like clay, which is abundant and biodegradable, this craft reduces reliance on synthetic products that can harm the environment; thus contributing positively to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, clay pots are ideal for gardening, as they provide excellent aeration and drainage for plants, helping to foster healthy plant growth.

Al Jab’a villages experience threats from the Israeli occupation and settlers on daily basis who often invade invade and attack their lands, homes, trees/crops and livestock, which causes a feeling of fear and despair among the population. Children and women in particular are in much need for such activities/events as they provide much-needed relief from  psychological stress and at the same foster their sense of connection to their land and greatly. Environmental activities redirect focus towards constructive and productive efforts, allowing individuals to engage in positive and meaningful pursuits rather than living in fear and instability.
